With the encroaching cities and sprawling
suburbs, coyotes, bobcats and large birds of prey have been temporarily driven
out of their former habitats. As the wild
lands around our urban sprawl shrink, these predators, along with a variety of
other animals and creatures are returning to their former habitats and adapting
to the new conditions.
It is the other creatures that interest me
the most. Where are elvenkind? Where are the trolls? Where are the goblins? There are many
creatures seen and unseen, named and unnamed, that dwelt here long before the
advent of men. They did not leave for
all time, no, they are returning, adapting, and living in our midst. Some of them have adapted quite well, others,
like the family of hedge gnomes living in the hedges on the east side of our
home, carry on quite as they have always carried on, but with a wary eye out
for the neighbourhood cat or dog.
I hesitate to mention, for fear of
appearing to be frivolous, that I know of one football playing troll who is hoping
to be drafted by a football team in Mississippi because he likes their team
record for of having the most personal fouls.
And I know of one beady eyed, long fingered, grasping little goblin who
works as a loan officer for a local bank.
You would be surprized where some of the other creatures are hiding in
plain view.
Where are the Cherubim, the Seraphim, the principalities, the powers,
the world rulers of this present darkness, the spiritual hosts of wickedness? Do you think that they are absent from this
world just because your eyes are not keen enough to seem them? True enough, the angels have no need of an
earthly home, but the principalities and powers, the world rulers of this
present darkness lust after our home.
They want this middle earth, and ourselves in the bargain, for their
own. Therein
lies the problem facing humankind. We
are not alone. We are not even the most
numerous of middle earth’s thinking inhabitants.
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” [Hebrews 13:2].
